What are WE doing right now?

This is from a conversation with two buddies in the past two days.

Is BYU doing ANYTHING, AT ALL, about conference realignment?  As far as I can tell, NO.  And I have an issue with that.

In the past few days college conference realignment has been showing a lot of smoke, but with today's announcement that Colorado is joining the PAC-10, the smoke has turned into fire. Texas and Notre Dame are the remaining dominos.  If they go, EVERY conference is going to significantly re-align.

Well where are we in the conversation? As far as I can tell, NOWHERE! WHAT IS TOM HOLMOE DOING TO BE PROACTIVE AND COME UP WITH A GREAT OUTCOME FOR BYU, OUR 65,000 SEAT FOOTBALL STADIUM, 20,000 SEAT BASKETBALL ARENA, NATIONAL FOLLOWING AND WORTHWHILE LOCAL TV MARKET?

NOTHING! I saw Holmoe in an interview about this a few weeks ago. He had a quintissential deer-in-the-headlights look on his face.

WHAT IS CRAIG THOMPSON DOING ABOUT THE SITUATION? NOTHING! I listened to an interview with him on ESPN Radio yesterday. The extent of his efforts was to say, "it looks like we'll have four, maybe 5 superconferences." 5 Superconferences? Why in the world would anyone go for 5 superconferences? That's a smaller slice of the pie for everyone, and it would mess up a potential national championship bracket. Trying to put the idea of 5 superconferences out there by saying the words, "4 or maybe 5 superconferences" is not getting it done Craig. Tom Holmoe is the deer in the headlights, Craig Thompson is the deer mounted on the wall.

I want your proactive proposals guys! Where are your ideas? Where were your calls to Colorado to create a strong regional conference? Where are your calls to ASU and U of A to stay in touch in case their interests aren't taken care of? Playing six teams from Texas and Oklahoma every year in a PAC-16 east division may not be their cup of tea.

What about calls to the PAC-10? Maybe Texas, Oklahoma and their 4 subordinates are coming your way. But then again, maybe they aren't. Maybe they'll invite ASU, UofA, New Mexico and UTEP to join a new expanded Southwest Conference. As long as the AZ schools are going to play all their games in Texas, they might as well align that way and split the $120M pie with UT & Co. rather than the $60M pie with the PAC-16 (8, 10, 12, whatever).

The PAC 10 could go in another direction. If the AZ schools go to a new SWC, and the PAC-9 now includes Colorado, maybe they're better off inviting Air Force, Utah, BYU, BSU, Fresno State, UNLV and Hawaii so they still have a superconference. That would end the threat of congressional action by Orrin Hatch in the process.
